Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy

O’Connor’s Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy Department includes both acute therapy services and outpatient rehabilitation and sports therapy servicesOutpatient-Therapy_web for patients of all ages.

Acute Care (Inpatient Therapy) Services are provided on the following units to patients who may benefit from skilled physical, occupational and/or speech therapy:

  • Medical/Surgical
  • Intermediate Care Telemetry
  • Critical Care
  • Neonatal Intensive Care
  • Pediatric

Outpatient Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy Services are offered on the basement level of O’Connor Hospital, and include physical therapy, speech and language pathology, and occupational therapy.

Outpatient Rehabilitation and Sports Therapy

Our goal is to get patients back to the highest level of functionality possible using state-of-the-art rehabilitation and sports therapy equipment. Our multidisciplinary and experienced team includes certified physical, occupational and speech therapists.

Physical Therapy
Our physical therapists are trained to evaluate and treat both acute and chronic injuries. We use the latest and most advanced equipment and techniques to help detect and treat factors contributing to a patient’s injury or condition. Our services include:Outpatient_Rehab_web

  • Gait training to restore normal walking patterns
  • Manual therapy to improve joint and soft tissue length and elasticity
  • Electrical stimulation, ultrasound, and paraffin to decrease pain, swelling and muscle spasm
  • Neuromuscular re-education to retrain movement patterns and body balance
  • Progressive home exercise program education
  • Training in proper posture and body mechanics for work, sport and leisure activities
  • Pediatric therapies to facilitate normal movement and developmental milestones.

Occupational Therapy
Occupational therapy means more than restoring lost function. Our occupational therapists help patients learn new skills or adapt to a permanent loss so that they can participate in daily living and work activities to the fullest extent possible. Our services include:

Speech-Language Pathology
Speech-language pathologists are trained to evaluate and treat patients with acute and progressive neurological deficits. We use the latest techniques to assess and treat factors related to speech, language, swallowing and cognitive-linguistic deficits.  Treatment options include:

Inpatient Orthopedic Rehabilitation

With joint replacement surgery, bone or joint trauma or degenerative joint diseases, patients often have limited function and mobility, pain and other complications. Our experienced and certified orthopedic rehabilitation therapists can create a rehabilitation program to address each patient’s unique needs. Treatments are tailored to restore physical function and enhance the skills needed to perform daily activities, build strength, endurance and range of motion, improve balance, regain mobility and optimize independence and performance.

Some of the most common diagnoses and treatment techniques our orthopedic rehabilitation therapists use include:

  • Manual therapy to restore range of motion, as well as tissue length and healing
  • Certified ASTYM therapy to address chronic tissue healing
  • Pilates exercises to address core stability as an adjunct to spinal rehabilitation
  • Sports-specific training to allow safe and rapid return to the sport
  • Pre- and post-operative musculoskeletal and joint replacement therapy
  • Gait and functional mobility training to restore safe and normalized movement
