O’Connor Hospital Hosts Community Event for Covered California Enrollment

San Jose, CA – With the deadline to enroll in a Covered California health plan fast approaching, O’Connor Hospital will host an Enrollment, Resource and Screening Event on Saturday, December 14 from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m.

There will be onsite assistance to help people apply for a Covered California health plan, Medi-Cal and CalFresh (formerly known as Food Stamps). O’Connor Hospital will provide free flu shots to the first 100 attendees, as well as provide free screenings for glucose, cholesterol, blood pressure and body mass index. Community organizations also will provide information on additional community resources.

Covered California is the state’s health insurance marketplace for the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, to provide individuals and small businesses access to affordable health insurance plans. Covered California estimates about 2.6 million Californians will be able to access financial assistance to pay for their health insurance, and 1.4 million will be newly eligible for Medi-Cal. December 23, 2013 is the deadline to enroll for coverage that starts on January 1, 2014.

O’Connor’s Health Benefits Resource Center (HBRC) has been reaching out to the local community with information on California’s new health benefit exchange since August 1, 2013. HBRC has shared information at more than 35 events in variety of locations, including schools, libraries, farmer’s markets and religious meetings places.
